A new relative popped up on a DNA site matching Ian. Ian wondered whether she was the daughter of a musician, that Ian has been a huge fan of since the 80s, based upon surname. Ian sent a message to the lady, though he didn’t anticipate a response. The young lady’s full name was the same as one of the musician’s daughters, verified via a simple internet search.
A few months passed, a new relative who shared DNA with Ian popped up. This DNA site confirmed the relative was the young lady’s father. The DNA website displayed his real name as James, not his stage name. Ian read the new relative’s autobiography, and his interest was piqued. The DNA website displayed the year of birth for this new DNA match, which was the same year that Ian knew the musicians to be. Wanting to confirm if this was really the musician, Ian, who thought it might be, he did some research.
Having found some of this new DNA relative’s ancestors. Ian started to search for DNA matches that contained some of these surnames. Fairly quickly, Ian found someone who Ian worked out was a first cousin to the musician. Ian sent a message to the lady who lives in Canada, querying whether her cousin was, in fact, who Ian thought it to be? The musician mentions an aunt and family going to Canada in his autobiography entitled “If I Was…”. ← paid link
The lady in Canada confirmed that yes, the musician was her first cousin. November 2019, Ian sent a message to the musician. Though Ian didn’t expect a reply, this time he did receive replies to his messages. The messages confirmed that the new DNA relative was the musician who Ian thought it might be.
The title of this post is a clue to who the musician is. It is a line from a song released in 1980, that musician sang, the song contains the line “Oh, Vienna”. Ian has wondered whether “Fade to Grey” could somehow be a reference to the musician’s mother.
The musician’s first cousin in Canada shares DNA with Jane, her father Joseph and Ian. DNA tests confirmed this. Our relative, the musician, co-organised Band Aid, Live Aid and Live 8. Ian was lucky that his better half managed to get an autographed 2021 calendar from the musician.

This is one of the many surprising / amazing discoveries that we made whilst trying to crack our family mystery.
