How we smashed our genealogical brick wall and made other interesting discoveries during our search to solve our family mystery

DNA doesn’t Lie, well it doesn’t as such, however there are 2 mains ways that people might match on a DNA comparison website:

  • IBS – Identical-by-state. Coincidentally identical segment.
  • IBD – Identical-by-descent. An inherited DNA segment that implies a common ancestor

A simple internet search will provide plenty of information on IBS or IBD. The more DNA you share with someone, the higher the likelihood that the match will be IBD.

A lot of genealogists always tell people to follow the records, there are reasons why this might not always help. We will try to explain why we couldn’t follow the records and how we cracked our family mystery.

Check out “Our Journey” page to read about how we cracked our mystery. These posts are in chronological order, if you wish to view our newest posts first, then click here

The initial aim of this website was to document how Jane and Ian persevered over a number of years to finally solve the reason why we could never get past our paternal great-grandfather’s genealogical records. Along the way, we have learnt some surprising and frankly shocking things about some our extended / distant family and the roles some of them played in history, so we will be documenting some of these discoveries, not all are ‘good’ historical stories.

Ian decided to use this website to share some of his and Sandra’s other interests, as they may be of interest to someone.
