On this page Ian will share what hardware he either already has or would purchase to create another Raspberry Pi webserver and the guide(s) he used to setup the software.
Hardware
Notes on the hardware:
The price of the microSDXC cards tends to fluctuate; Ian prefers the A2 microSD cards as they tend to deliver higher performance. The choice of fanless case for the RPi is just a personal preference.
Ian prefers to store the database and content for the websites on an SSD for performance reasons, this is optional. If you choose not to use an SSD, then you don’t need to purchase a powered USB Hub or the external SSD enclosure. The price of SSD’s also tend to fluctuate, choose a brand you favour or snag a bargain, alternatively you could purchase an all in one USB 3 Hard Drive, though make sure it can be powered somehow, do not rely on the RPi providing the power as it probably start the Pi issuing power warnings.
The total cost of the above Hardware is around £ 150 excluding P&P charges and any extra cables you might need, though if you skip the SSD option you could reduce the spend by almost 50%. If someone is paying £ 10 per month for shared web hosting, then if you like a bit of challenge, self hosting becomes a possibility.
