The gentleman called Bill shares 101 cM (centiMorgans) with Ian on Ancestry. How can this be? Bill has a maternal great grandmother called Catherine Walton. Could this be the Kate Walton on Joseph Leigh Hunter’s wedding record?

Catherine Walton appears to have been married to Matthew Lee 1838-1892, not a Hunter in sight on Bill’s family tree at Ancestry. When we searched the census documents for 1881 and 1891 for this Matthew Lee, we find the following:

From, the two census documents above we can see that Catherine and Matthew Lee had five children:

John Lee was 17 on 1881 census so born approx. 1863

Thomas Lee was 14 on the 1881 census so born approx. 1867

Matthew Lee was 12 on the 1881 census so born approx. 1869

Sarah Lee was 18 on the 1891 census so born approx. 1873

Ada I Lee was 12 on the 1891 census so born approx. 1879

Ada Isabel Lee, born on 15 Feb 1879 Crook, Durham, England, appears in Bill’s tree at Ancestry as one of his maternal grandmothers.

On the 1891 census, we can see that sons John and Matthew no longer live at home with their parents. By 1891, John and Matthew would have been approximately 27 and 22, respectively.

How could Jane, her father Joseph and Ian connect to this family without any common surnames?
